“Look out for Mark Hampson’s frenetic painted prints packed with Imagery and energy. They are like a ‘visual beating up’ of your senses” - Claire Henry (The Observer, 1992) “The reference carrying Images he uses and reuses often resemble characters rehearsing plays; they make an entrance, become modified and over period of time, that my see a whole body of work develop, take on new meanings. Works, particularly the larger pieces, appear to have a cast, a set and ever a plot. They are often self contains dramas or gross parodies of medieval mystery plays. Ultimately the work is about the Impossibility of representing the new and modern in a totally original and honest way – there are as many interpretations as there are pairs of legs. In the midst of daily life, where knowledge and pleasure are gleaned from a variety of contradictory sources and humans are saturated by images, there can be no single aesthetic and no fixed meanings – so be it in Art” – Trevor Coombos, Beaux Arts, 1993 | |||||
